We are a group of biogeographers and ecologists interested in spatial and temporal distributions of aquatic plants at broad scales. This international lab is operated from the Geography Research Unit, University of Oulu, Finland, where we are part of Physical Geography Research Group, and from Department of Biodiversity and Environmental Management, University of Leon, Spain.
Our research integrates macroecology, biogeography, physical geography, community ecology, conservation ecology, spatial ecology and biostatistics. The overall purpose of our research is to study patterns and processes structuring aquatic plants in relation to global change at various spatial and temporal scales. Our focus is on lake and river systems. Although boreal and Mediterranean freshwaters are our key study region, we investigate aquatic plants at various ecosystems and regions covering the whole Earth. We are interested in fundamental and applied research topics like:

We are interested in fundamental and applied research topics like:
- Metacommunity structuring of aquatic macrophytes
- Influence of geodiversity on freshwater biology
- Geographical gradients in taxonomic, phylogenetic and functional macrophyte biodiversity
- Niche conservatism in aquatic macrophytes
- Modelling and predicting macrophyte species distributions
- Effects of environmental changes on spatial patterns of macrophyte biodiversity
- Temporal changes in macrophytes in relation to global change
- Spatial and temporal distribution of aquatic vegetation in the Bothnia Bay
